For the last little while, I've been wondering about about the direction and ultimate fate of this site.
I think it suffers from a lack of direction because it is neither as rigorous a Collector/Gear site as The Nikon Historic Society, Rangefinder Forum, or the
Manual focus and Rangefinder forum at Nikonians, nor is it populated with as many high-calibre photographers as one usually sees at any number of photo-driven
sites. Thus I find it to be neither fish nor fowl, which I can see being unsatisfying to many people looking for a site to call home.
Also, with respect to the threads dedicated to photography, I find the lack of comments frustrating. I've posted as many shots here as anyone else has, and
find most of them don't get any comments. Say you like it. Or say you hate it. Or even better, say why you like it or hate it, and what you think can or
could have been done to improve it. but say something. I post at enough other places that if no one says anything here, it's not the end
of the world, but I can see how that would tend to drive other people away.
Being one of the Charter Members who was actually asked to join (a decision I'm sure you've come to regret) I'd hate to see this site dry up and
blow away, but I fear that if participation doesn't increase to the extent that this becomes a lively and interesting place to visit, that will likely
happen. I think we need to decide exactly what Nikontalk is going to be, and then if in agreement strive to push it in that direction.
Thoughts? Anyone?

It isn't up to me alone to take this site in a particular direction, but rather, if that is to be done, it should be either by the owner(s)/founder(s) or if you want to be democratic, by committee. Your answer and the length of time it took you to post it lead me to believe that you, are losing interest in this venture. Additionally, while this thread has been seen by 22 others, not one other person has even bothered to comment or reply, so either everyone else thinks the site is fine as it is, or they also don't care enough to try and improve it. I hope that some of the other people who frequent the site will speak up and offer an opinion.

Robert,
You've certainly let us know that we are not high-caliber photographers. That has taken its toll on postings of photo's to the relevent sections. This site should be a place to relax with friends, and exchange information about Nikons. It should also be a place to show the fun that we have with our equipment, with pictures taken with the cameras and of the cameras. YUKU has also taken its toll with heavy-handed Pop-up ads in the middle os posts. I wonder if there is another Host that is a little more subtle about its revenue generating ads. |

I really hope this great site will stay alive and develop over time! For me it is, as stated above, a great place to meet friends, relax and exchange information about my hobby! Jon |

What I did say was, "....nor is it populated with as many high-calibre photographers as one usually sees at any number of photo-driven sites." Seems to me there is a difference between what I wrote and what you've perceived it to mean. At any rate, if people find that statement demeaning or intimidating to the point that they won't post images, then the loss is theirs. I've been working very hard at this art form for thirty years to become a good photographer, and while I'm not as bad as I think I am, I'm not as good as I'd like to be. One of the things I do to achieve that end is take part in an Evaluation Group which is made up of about a dozen photographers who get together about once a month to look at each others images and give as well as receive constructive criticism. Sometimes I eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats me. But I've learned a lot, and think I'm a better photographer for the experience. But as Uncle Sidney used to say, "That's why we have Chocolate and why we have Vanilla." So if you and the others want a more laid back and loose atmosphere here without their images being critiqued, then just say the word and I'll stop. Either put a note tag on an image saying DO NOT CRITIQUE, or reply to this post by saying that my input on images is not appreciated and I'll not say anything more. I certainly don't want to drive anyone away. As for you other point about the ads, I think you'd have to invoke Devine Intervention to get them to make them disappear. |

I propose that critiques are done in the Pictures Talk forum, but not the W/NW forum.
Just to reiterate what others have already said, to me this forum is a place to chat with friends, exchange information about our shared hobby, and share photos. If I want any critiquing of my photos, I'll be sure to note that when I post them. Jon |

I have to admit I'm only here because RFF is on the fritz, and this thread highlights the reason I've been scarce.
I just don't find it relaxing here. At first, it was a nice place to hang out with a few good Nikoneer friends. But it really isn't a large enough site to be able to ignore someone with a strong personality and sense of mssion about photo critiques that are, as often as not, rather far removed from my experience with constructive photography education. |
