I can't believe how the original 85mm f1.8 lens for the Nikon F consistantly breaks the $200 mark!

The 85/2 in F-Mount is not cheap either.
Nor should they be, they are great lenses. The 85/2 is under-rated. A lot of phtographers resented the 85/1.8 being replaced by the 85/2. We RF users know that the 85/2 is the lens that really put Nikon on the Map. |

Well, both the 85/1.8 and the 85/2 deserve the prices they seem to be getting as both are fine lenses. I have an 85/1.8 in the last version produced that is
ai. Can anyone say for sure if this lens was available factory direct as an ai? I really like using this lens. A friend has an 85/2 that he says is one of his
favourite lenses.

The Nikon 85/1.8 was never available as an AI lens.Nikon would "Factory convert it", which means a new aperture ring. It never had the extra lugs on
the focus mount for some extra keying of a "natice" AI lens.

For what it is worth, I plan on doing some lens testing of my "new" 85/1.4 vs. my "old" 85/1.8 and will post them when I get them done.
Unfortunately, I don't have a 85/2 to add to the mix.

The 85/2 is a fine performer, gets a bum-rap for the "old-core". I think it was a plot to keep the price down. The 105/2.5 has the edge over the
85's.
