What's the longest lens you have?
What's the longest lens you want?

I have been craving a 500mm lately

I don't have the money to buy one, but, I do have a 200-600mm amd a 50-300mm, first one in Ai mount and second one in Ais.
I use to have a VR 80-400mm but sold that to a friend.

Do I get rid of some of my stuff to buy one of these beasts?

Or may be since I have the 200-600mm, I should consider this:

But then I have to sell a lots of stuff!! May be my house too....

This Nikon Bug is killing me

The longest lens I currently own is the Nikkor 300 2.8 ED AIS. Mine belonged to The Canadian Press News Service, so looks like it was used to hammer nails. However, the glass is perfect, so I got it at a very good price, and it works very well.
I won't bother to post a photo of it along with the Steamer Trunk case it resides in, because I'm certain everyone knows what they both look like.
Please enlighten me again on why you "crave a 500 f4", when you've already got that focal length covered with the 200~600 zoom. I only ask because this collecting for the sake of collecting business is truly a mystery to me.

For me, it's not just collecting the stuff, I like to try/use the stuff. It's true that I can probably rent super Telephotos to try them but I have never rented! May be it's time to start?

For the sake of argument, I don't really collect the stuff, I have so much stuff that lots spend most of time on the shelf, but none of it is collector grade, what I have is user stuff, and I use them.

The problem with the 200-600mm is that it's soooooo slow, the maximum aperture is f9.5!, almost use-less unless you are shotting in bright daylight. The 50-300 is kinda slow too, only f4.5 and it's heavy, probably heavier than your 300 f2.8, if I am carrying heavy loads, it may as well be fast stuff, I don't have anything faster than f2 past 105mm---no 300mm f2.8, no 400mm f2.8.... I don't even have a 300mm f4.0, the fastest Super Telephoto I have is the old pre-set 350mm F4.5

I just have the bug of trying a fast one, I wanna see what a 2.8 is like on a 300mm or a 400mm

The 500mm f4.0 P seems like the lens to have, it has the chip for all the newer cameras and has the prong too!

Personally the 800mm f5.6 is kinda over-do for me, I have never seen one in person, and I assume it's huge

KEH has a 300 2.8 IF-ED AIS with hood caps and case for $1,219.00, which is a pretty good price.

Not exactly the type of lenses you would put on the camera for some "mingle"-photos when you go to a party and want to bring the camera !! :-)

Kiu,
This is the part about collecting that I don't understand. You've obviously paid a few dollars to get the 200~600 and you now complain that it is f9.5, and so is useless as a practical lens. So why keep it? To me it would be simpler to sell it and use the money to get something you can use to take photos with.

Actually,
I did not pay that much for that lens!
If memory serves me right, I paid less than $600. I hunted a long time to get it though, got it off ebay about 5 years ago.
Don't get me wrong, I would not hesitate to sell it, just like I did VR 80-400
When I bought the VR 80-400, from KEH I might add, I traded a few items to get it.

Now, you gave me the idea of checking the price of the 200-600....may be a fast super telephoto is close to reality, after all, I can come up with a few more pieces.

If you get $500-$1,000 for the lens you won't be able to get a super-fast telephoto, or barely even one that's just merely fast.
To me, the only super-fast telephoto is the Nikkor 300 f2, and they go for about $10,000 the last time I saw one.

The longest Nikkor that I have is a 1000mm refex which unfortunately has some fungus. My fastest long lens is a 300mm/2.8 Tamron SPAF. I don't really crave any others, at least my wallet doesn't.

Is this TOO cheap? 3 day auction, the seller has no feedback for selling! Only buying.
