The kit zooms might be eye-openers for me ... the last zooms I really liked were Vivitar Series 1s. But at work I use a D80 with 18-135, and I don't care for its lens size. I frequently replace it with AI primes or a venerable 50/2, one of my few pre-AI lenses with a shallow-enough collar to safely mount on the D80....

It was only last year(2006) when the Nikkor 18-55mm II was introduced along with the then New D40:

VR is actually a neat feature, especially on the zooms you carry around often.... I have the 24-120 VR I, the 105 Micro VR II and the 70-300 VR II and the need for using a flash is definately minimised....

No VR. I knew I'd get that if I waited (or possibly if I bought a D40X). This is my first autofocus lens. VR can wait. Much of my shootig will be done with fast primes anyway.

Well, our D40 kit arrived today. I'm charging the battery before wrapping it up for my wife to open. This gave me a good excuse to play with the two kit lenses (I don't need 10 MP, so I bought a D40 with two lenses for the same money as a D40x). The last time I bought an SLR was my wife's FM2n 15 years ago, so this is a major step for us. I guess the newest Nikon I've used up to now is an F2 (or an S3-2000, if that counts). With the D40, I'm intrigued about using unmetered...

I haven't taken any pictures with it yet but looking tru the 18-55 DX mounted on the F2 I see very little vignetting even at 18mm, by 20 or 21mm it seems all good!

I like the dark corners, it kinda gives a retro look.

It will mount fine Bill,
The F5 will definitly hurt the feelings of Nikkor 18-55mm

Kiu, if you just want to see what the viewfinder view looks like, just stick your DX lens on your FM3A. You won't do the lens or body any harm. I did that with my Tokina 10-17mm fisheye zoom, and discovered that the zoom covers the full frame from 14.5mm and up. It's effectively a full frame fisheye lens from 14.5mm up. Like getting two lenses for the price of one, except of course, I have no way to control the aperture on the FM3A body.

Hi Kiu,

You realize that DX lenses won't work properly on full frame SLRs? DX lenses are intended for 1.5x crop sensors, so at least it will work fine on the D1.

You'all don't realize how important this is to me!!
I got my first DX format lens!!
I am gonna try it on my D50, pronea series and my F series!!
I may even put it on the D1 or the E3!!

Congrats. I'm thinking hard about a D40 this holiday. Hard to commit to an SLR after all these years with the rangefinders, but digital has its advantages, and that lens sounds great.

I believe the II designation makes this the kit lens for the D40
Now I can sell the D50 claiming an up-grade lens!
But first I need a D70s or D80
