From what I hear, the 1.8 will beat the heck out of the 1.4

Nor should they be, they are great lenses. The 85/2 is under-rated. A lot of phtographers resented the 85/1.8 being replaced by the 85/2. I can't believe how the original 85mm f1.8 lens for the Nikon F consistantly breaks the $200 mark!
